Excess heat is continuously generated in society, often involving large amounts of energy but at a rather low temperature. Therefore, solutions are needed to utilize this available energy.
The first speaker at the Bothnia Green Energy project’s seminar on March 19th was Denise Conway, CEO of Heliostorage, a company dedicated to decarbonizing energy through the integration of thermal and electrical storage. Her presentation was titled “Capitalizing on waste heat using long duration thermal storage”.
“50% of the world’s energy is wasted as heat. Capturing waste heat from industry presents a massive opportunity to reduce emissions,” Conway explained.
The second speaker was Timo Laakso, Head of Technical and Business Consulting at Elomatic, a Finnish engineering and consulting company. His presentation was titled “Excess heat utilization, opportunities and challenges”.
“Waste heat is often the most environmentally and cost-effective way to produce heat. There’s considerable potential in the use of excess heat in Finland,” Laakso explained.
Next up was Åsa Björkman, Project Manager of the circular economy project Alholmen Circular Economy Platform at Alholmen Industrial Park. The title of her presentation was “Industrial synergy: Excess heat into valuable energy at AIP: Presentation of an energy industry and pulp production model, where energy and value circulate”.
Björkman coordinates and develops collaboration between the industries at Alholmen Industrial Park, thereby enhancing the conditions for a circular economy.
The seminar’s last speaker was Lars Birging, CEO of Zigrid, a company that produces electricity from wasted heat at uniquely low temperatures, for example, from the process industry. His presentation was titled “Power from uniquely low temperatures – possible and is it viable?”.
“Producing power from waste energy down to 50°C open up new application areas, not only in the traditional process industry but also in growing segments like green hydrogen and liquid cooled datacentres,” Birging explained.
Finally, all the speakers participated in a panel discussion. The moderator for the entire seminar was Catarina Still, Project Manager at Jakobstad Development Company Concordia.
“I want to thank all our speakers, and I’m grateful for the insights they have enlightened us with,” Still said.
