The Kvarken Council 50 years!
50 years of official cooperation over the Kvarken strait was celebrated with a big festival for everyone in the region.
50 years of official cooperation
The Kvarken Council was founded in 1972 during the first Kvarken Conference in Vaasa, Finland. The first years were dedicated to the organization’s formation and the cooperation’s anchoring in the municipalities, authorities, and organizations. In 1979, the Kvarken Council became a part of the official Nordic border-regional cooperation, with financial support from the Nordic Council of Ministers and its Nordic Senior Official’s Committee for Regional Policy (NÄRP).
The Kvarken Council’s operations was administered by a non-profit association as of 2008. At the turn of the year 2020–2021, the Kvarken Council changed from a registered association to a stable legal entity when the Kvarken Council EGTC began its operations.
Grand 50th Anniversary Celebration
50 years of official cooperation over the Kvarken strait was celebrated with a big festival for everyone in the region. The festival took place on Elisa Stadion in Vaasa on June 18th, 2022. The multilingual festival was an all-day event with diverse program. The daytime program was more family-oriented and an event for decision-makers, KvarkenTalks, was also arranged during the day. The evening was filles with top artists from the region.
Kvarkenfest, and the celebration of 50 years of structured, Nordic cooperation in the region was a success thanks to excellent collaboration between both financiers and cooperation partners, who rose to the challenge in a remarkable way. Kvarkenfest had over 4,300 participants and KvarkenTalks had over 100 participants from both sides of the Kvarken.
